While a submission is being edited, it's 'Status' will be 'In Progress'. After hitting ["Submit"](submit2nmdc.md#L131), a submission's 'Status' becomes 'Submitted - Pending Review' and can no longer be edited. From here, the 'Status' may change to 'Updates Required', in which case a staff member will reach out and explain any necessary changes and the submission will become editable again. All potential 'Status' values are described below.
