Small Business AI Readiness Checklist

Before you spend time or money on AI tools, find out if your business is actually ready to use them.

Most small businesses that struggle with AI don't have a technology problem. They have a readiness problem. Their data is scattered, their processes aren't documented, their team isn't aligned, and their expectations are set by hype rather than reality.

This checklist helps you find the gaps before they become expensive mistakes.

Maintained by Pro-How — AI training, strategy, and automation for small business owners.

How to use this checklist

Work through each section honestly. For every item you can't check off, you've found something to fix before investing further in AI.

The checklist is organized into five areas:

Area What it covers
1. Data & Information Is your business information organized and accessible?
2. Processes & Documentation Are your workflows documented and repeatable?
3. Tools & Software Is your current tech stack AI-compatible?
4. Team & Culture Is your team ready to adopt new tools?
5. Goals & Expectations Do you know what you actually want AI to do?

Scoring

At the end of each section, tally your checkmarks.

Score What it means
90–100% You're ready. Start implementing.
70–89% Mostly ready. Address the gaps first, then start small.
50–69% Some groundwork needed. Fix the foundations before adding AI.
Below 50% Not ready yet. Focus on the basics — AI will amplify the mess, not fix it.
