Summary - What I changed
Hardcoded Scanner MAC Address: Exploit tooling and PoC scanners targeting CVE-2026-0257 hardcode synthetic MAC addresses (
aa:bb:cc:dd:ee:ff,00:11:22:33:44:55) in the GlobalProtect client handshake. No production NIC ships with sequential-hex MAC values, so it is inherently suspicious.Successful Authentication Without User Domain: On a domain-joined Windows endpoint, PAN-OS always populates
panw.panos.source.userwithDOMAIN\usernamefrom the Windows credential store. A successful gateway connection where this field is null or empty while the client OS reports as Windows indicates the client bypassed normal credential population. This is scoped to Windows viapanw.panos.client.os_versionto avoid FPs from mobile and non-domain devices that legitimately authenticate without domain context. Certificate-only GlobalProtect profiles are the primary false positive source and are documented in the rule. How To Test
