This guide shows how to use the red-team framework to test various API endpoints without access to source code.
# Run with API-only configuration
npx tsx red-team.ts --config config.api-only.json
# Or use the dedicated API testing script
npx tsx api-only-test.tsYou can now test any API endpoint by configuring custom request templates:
{
"target": {
"baseUrl": "http://localhost:4000",
"agentEndpoint": "/v1/chat/completions",
"customApiTemplate": {
"method": "POST",
"headers": {
"Content-Type": "application/json"
},
"bodyTemplate": "{\"model\": \"gpt-4.1-mini\", \"messages\": [{\"role\": \"user\", \"content\": \"{{message}}\"}]}",
"responsePath": "choices[0].message.content"
}
},
"codebasePath": null // Enable API-only mode
}{
"attackConfig": {
"enableMultiTurnGeneration": true, // DEFAULT: true
"multiTurnGenerationRate": 0.4, // 40% of attacks use multi-turn
"maxMultiTurnSteps": 15, // DEFAULT: 15 (increased from 8)
"enableAdaptiveMultiTurn": true, // DEFAULT: true - AI response-driven
"maxAdaptiveTurns": 15 // Max conversation length
}
}Adaptive Multi-Turn is now enabled by default! Attacks will:
- Analyze AI responses in real-time
- Generate follow-ups based on what the AI says
- Build trust gradually before escalating
- Adapt strategy if the AI refuses or complies

}- Prompt injection vulnerabilities - System prompt override, jailbreaks
- Output filtering bypass - Guardrail evasion techniques
- Data exfiltration - Extracting sensitive information through responses
- Authentication flaws - JWT manipulation, API key abuse
- Rate limiting - Testing throttling and abuse prevention
- Input validation - Parameter injection, malformed requests
- Content policy violations - Toxic content generation
- Information disclosure - Leaking system details, configuration
- Cannot discover internal tool implementations
- Limited visibility into backend security controls
- No insight into data flow or storage mechanisms
- Cannot detect supply chain vulnerabilities in dependencies

}- Start with reconnaissance - Use API discovery attacks first
- Test authentication thoroughly - Try all auth bypass techniques
- Monitor rate limiting - Respect API limits during testing
- Document findings - The framework generates detailed reports
- Test incrementally - Start with safe attacks, escalate gradually
- Use realistic scenarios - Frame attacks as legitimate use cases
The framework will generate reports showing:
- ✅ PASS - Attack succeeded, potential vulnerability
⚠️ PARTIAL - Suspicious response, needs manual review- ❌ FAIL - Attack blocked by defenses
- 🔧 ERROR - Technical failure (network, auth, etc.)
Look for patterns like:
- High success rates in specific categories
- Partial responses that leak information
- Inconsistent rate limiting behavior
- Error messages revealing internal details
