On extended monitors: one screen goes black when in full screen

Hi everyone,

I sometimes connect my laptop to an external monitor, which I use as an extended display.
Whenever I do this, it becomes impossible to watch something full screen on one monitor and work on the other. My laptop screen goes black if external monitor goes full screen (say when playing a YT video), and the monitor goes black when i go full screen on my laptop.

Any tips? Do I need to activate the 'Displays have separate spaces' option? I have this off as per the installation recommendations. However, I do not know the downsides of activating it.

Sounds like the behavior when "Displays have separate Spaces" in macOS settings is disabled. If you want macOS native full screen on one display and the secondary monitor to continue independently try enabling "‘Displays have separate Spaces" in macOS settings.

If you change this, note the other differences in the table linked above.
