Description

The current playback speed control implementation on the Article and Podcast screens is user-friendly, but we can make it better. Instead of cycling through speed values or displaying inline controls, introduce a floating speed selector that presents all available playback speeds in a compact menu.

The interaction should be similar to the attached example, where tapping the speed indicator opens a floating menu containing all supported playback speeds.

Proposed Changes

Floating Speed Selector

  • Replace the existing speed control UI with a floating dropdown/popover menu.
  • Display all available playback speeds in a single list.

Supported Speeds

  • 0.5x
  • 0.75x
  • 1x
  • 1.25x
  • 1.5x
  • 1.75x
  • 2x

Interaction

  • Tapping the current speed indicator opens the floating selector.

  • Selecting a speed immediately updates playback speed.

  • Highlight the currently selected speed.

  • Dismiss the selector when:

    • A speed is selected
    • User taps outside the menu
    • Screen loses focus

Screens

Apply wherever playback speed controls exist, including:

  • Article audio playback screen
  • Podcast player screen
  • Any future audio/video playback interfaces using speed controls

Expected Outcome

  • Faster speed selection with fewer taps.
  • Cleaner playback controls.
  • Consistent experience across article and podcast playback.
  • Better scalability if additional playback speeds are introduced.

Acceptance Criteria

  • Floating speed selector is implemented.
  • All supported playback speeds are displayed.
  • Current speed is visually highlighted.
  • Speed changes are applied immediately upon selection.
  • Selector closes appropriately after interaction.
  • Works consistently on both Article and Podcast screens.
  • Verified on Android and iOS devices.
